Behind the scenes: astrophysicist prepares to announce world-changing discovery

Senior LIGO astrophysicist, gravitational waves expert and Northwestern University professor Vicky Kalogera traveled to Washington, D.C., to appear on a global panel Oct. 16, 2017 to announce the first neutron star collision ever observed. Kalogera was one of only a few people chosen to represent the LIGO collaboration, which consists of more than 1,000 members around the world. As the first member in her family to ever attend and graduate from college, Kalogera explains how she could never have predicted this moment when she was young.
